Ride Your Own Ride

I’ve been riding motorcycles daily for about 9 years now. As a rider, there are certain things you encounter that are just an inevitable part of motorcycles. In addition to people feeling obligated to inform you about every horrific accident involving a motorcycle they’ve ever heard of, there will always be bikers going faster or doing crazier stuff than you think is safe.  

A veteran biker knows the phrase “ride your own ride.” In other words, don't be too concerned by what someone else is doing and focus instead on what YOU are doing to be a safe, responsible individual.

This same principle can be applied to voiceover.

After going through this week, several things have become pretty evident:

• There will always be someone willing to work for less than what is fair just to get the job.

• There will always be someone cashing in and exploiting the naivete of a neophyte.

• There will always be someone who responds to a disagreement with the nuclear option.

• Trolls are going to be trolls no matter what.

You are ultimately the only person in control of your own destiny. You can choose to be angry or upset by the reactions of others, or you can continue to focus on what matters most: your own success. I'm not losing any sleep over the rantings of people I care nothing about. All I care about is being a professional and exceeding my clients expectations. 

All you can do as a professional is shake your head, laugh it off and plan the work week ahead.
